What is lipids, classification of lipids and type of lipids

LIPIDS
Lipids are organic compounds that are insoluble in water, but soluble in fats, oils, and alcohols. They are made up of heterogeneous compounds (fats, oils, steroids, waxes, and related compounds), having similar physical properties and different chemical properties. Lipids are biologically important because they constitute the cell membrane which covers the cell and protects it from the external environment. Lipids also provide energy, and some essential vitamuns.

Classification

1.Simple Lipids:

These are esters of fatty acids having various alcohols.

i) on the basis of their chemical composition as follows.

I) Oil and fats:-
These are esters of fatty acids with glycerol. Oils are fats in the liquid state.

ii) Waxes:
These are esters of fatty acids with high molecular weight monohydric alcohols.

2) Compound Lipids:
These are esters of fatty acids having an alcohol, a fatty acid and other groups.

i) Phospholipids:
These are lipids with fatty acids, acid residue. Generally, they have nitrogen bases and other substituents, e.g., in glycerophospholipids the alcohol is glycerol and in sphingophospholipids t.e alcohol is sphingosine. alcohol, and a phosphoric an.

ii) Glycolipids (Glycosphingolipids):
These are lipids with a sphingosine, and carbohydrate.

iii) Other Complex Lipids:
Sulpholipidsaminolipids, and lipoproteins are examples of this category fatty acid.

3) Derived Lipids:
Vast range of chemical agents are classified under derived lipids, e.g., fatty acids, glycerol, steroids, terpenes, carotenoids, alcohols, fatty aldehydes.
